Traffic research and traffic safety

Thousands of people are injured on Swedish roads every year. Since If insures the majority of cars in Sweden, we aim to contribute to making our roads safer, both for drivers and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

We collect, process, and analyze data to develop and evaluate traffic safety. Our findings are used by the automotive industry, traffic planners, and other societal stakeholders to create a safer and more sustainable traffic environment.

Current topics in our traffic research

Cycling on rural roads
In a just finished, 1-year rural cycling study we combined survey data, simulator studies with Augumented Reality, an innovation workshop, and GIS-data.

The long term goals are: Clearer laws, smarter vehicles that takes into account cyclists needs, and more people choosing bikes to reduce traffic and improve health.

VERDAS
The VERDAS project aims to enhance road safety by developing both physical and virtual verification methods for ADAS. These methods will enable efficient development of driver assistance systems capable of addressing a larger share of accidents, and ensure robust safety performance in real-world scenarios.

How should we think about children and traffic? How many children are injured in traffic, and how do these accidents happen? PAV: Comprehensive Data on Vehicle-Pedestrian and Vehicle-Cyclist Crashes

We collect and analyze data on crashes involving cars and pedestrians or cyclists, providing statistical insights for various analysis tasks.

Our data collection began in 2010 and has continuously evolved to include all types of people interacting with any kind of motor vehicle. The database covers Pre-Crash, Crash, and Post-Crash phases, with detailed information on impact zones, human injuries, surrounding infrastructure, and environmental factors such as weather, lighting, and road conditions.
What makes this database unique is its broad coverage and sample design, capturing crashes that are often missing from national crash databases.

To date, the PAV database contains over 5,400 documented cases, making it a valuable resource for traffic safety research and development.
